xG Technology has entered into a reseller agreement with Telemedicine-MM Systems, New York-based health care systems integrator, under which they have agreed to purchase a minimum of $2,500,000 of xMax network equipment between now and March 31, 2015.

Telemedicine-MM will deploy xMax wireless voice and broadband services focusing on telemedicine, telehealth, medevac, and related applications throughout CARICOM, the community of 15 nations and dependencies located in the Caribbean.

“The growth of telemedicine is accelerating globally as a way to control health care costs and provide specialty services to patients in remote locations,” said Rod Francis, CEO and founder of Telemedicine-MM Systems. “The xMax system offers us a low cost, high-bandwidth solution that is easy to deploy in the challenging geographies we operate in. The fact that we can operate a carrier grade system in freely available and zero-cost unlicensed spectrum just about anywhere in the Americas helps us provide economical wireless Internet-based solutions to our customers.”

This agreement brings the total announced backlog of orders and reseller agreements for xMax equipment and services to over $33.1 million, and expands the growing market traction that xG’s technology is experiencing into healthcare and telemedicine applications.

Previous announcements have highlighted agreements for deploying xMax in a wide range of industries and applications, including rural telecom, public safety, education, utilities, local government, gaming and casinos, hospitality, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare.

“We are excited to see our technology supporting the delivery of vital health services,” said Chris Whiteley, Vice President of Business Development for xG Technology. "This partnership with Telemedicine-MM not only expands the application of our technology, but also represents international demand for cognitive radio solutions to real-world problems.”

Under the terms of the order, xG will be paid upon the delivery of FCC certified xMax equipment to Telemedicine-MM Systems, which is expected to commence in the second half of 2013.

xG Technology has been featured in an Urgent Communications Magazine article written by Donny Jackson entitled xG Technology Logs Orders, Projects Q2 Product Delivery.

The article recaps that xG has recently announced over $14 million from rural telecommunications carriers and wireless dealers in anticipation of delivering operational systems in the second quarter. These system will provide carrier-grade wireless broadband connectivity while operating on unlicensed spectrum.

This total includes orders from three wireless solutions providers — PMC Associates of Hazlet, N.J., Communications Marketing Southeast of Dallas, Ga., and Mobile-One Communications of Venice, Fla. — that have committed to purchasing a combined total of $6 million in xG Technology gear when it is scheduled to be available during the second quarter of this year. All three companies have a background in the LMR (land mobile radio) industry, serving public-safety entities and enterprises such as utilities.

In an interview with Urgent Communications, Jason Bentley, general manager of Communications Marketing Southeast, said, "As soon as I saw [xG Technology's] capabilities internally — the technology, the lack of competition for this technology and just seeing the horsepower behind the group — I immediately got excited."

With the FCC placing an emphasis on spectrum-utilization strategies such as spectrum sharing, the cognitive capabilities of xG Technology's xMax system are especially attractive, according to PMC Wireless President Phil Casciano.

"We serve some of the largest public-safety entities in our region, and they demand that we have cutting-edge technology for them," Casciano said during an interview. "So, any time we get an opportunity to present something like xG, we feel like we're doing a good service for our customer base.

Mobile-One President Mike Loncar echoed this sentiment. "We're hoping to use that [xG] technology to mitigate interference, to have something that's completely deployable without any complications," Loncar said during an interview. "The technology can actually work around any interference — it identifies it and reallocates its spectrum. We're excited; it sounds like it's going to be a great product."

According to Rich Schubiger, xG Vice President of Sales, "We have a pipeline that's north of $100 million right now. We've identified the opportunity. We've identified that we do have a solution that fits the needs of the customer, and we've identified a funding solution. Between short and long term, that number is north of $100 million."

He continued, "Short term, it's heavily weighted with public-safety and rural-broadband opportunities. From the enterprise side, there's education, healthcare and utilities."

In a press release, xG has announced the receipt of a $1,030,750 order from Assist Wireless, LLC, a Fort Worth, TX-based Eligible Telecommunications Carrier (ETC) to deploy xMax wireless voice and broadband services in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and surrounding Cherokee county.

Assist Wireless currently operates in Arkansas, Maryland and Oklahoma with planned expansion in California, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Texas. They offer subsidized wireless service for low-income subscribers through Lifeline, a federally mandated low-income assistance program.

"We view xMax cognitive radio technology as a new way to grow our existing business, diversifying into new areas such as municipal mobile broadband, schools, hospitals and first responder applications," said Byron Young, CEO of Assist Wireless. "The xMax system offers us a low cost, carrier-grade solution for deploying new internet-based services that our customers want, without requiring access to cost-prohibitive licensed spectrum."

This purchase order brings the total announced backlog of orders and reseller agreements for xMax equipment and services to over $30.6 million, and highlights the growing market traction that xG's technology is experiencing across a wide range of industries and applications including rural telecom, public safety, education, utilities, local government, gaming and casinos, hospitality, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare.

"Assist Wireless has significant telecom operating experience, proven network deployment knowhow, maintenance expertise, as well an excellent reputation for customer service," said Chris Whiteley, Vice President of Business Development for xG Technology. "We are pleased to see xMax being adopted by a growing number of CLECs and independent telco operators who do not own licensed spectrum, but understand the importance of offering wireless Internet-based services to their customers."

George Schmitt, xG Technology Director (and CEO of xG parent company MB Technology Holdings), was quoted in an article that appeared in Business Insider entitled “AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile Signed An Unprecedented Deal To Make Smartphones Work Better.”

The article states that for the first time AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have agreed to experiment with sharing network space with each other and the federal government.

In the past, the government has auctioned off wireless spectrum, and each carrier got its own spectrum. But they desperately need more, and the Feds have it, most of it sitting unused, reserved for the military. Previously the carriers would not consider sharing spectrum, but as George Schmitt was quoted in the article, this deal would allow carriers to handle double to quadruple the number of phone calls and video downloads they could handle now.

"Demand could go up a couple 100 percent and there will still be plenty of capacity," he said.

In addition, the spectrum under consideration is quite vast and is already being used by carriers in Europe, "so there are plenty of smartphones available without having to manufacture products with new frequencies," according to George Schmitt.

One of the gamechanging technologies available to enable spectrum sharing is cognitive radio, of which xG’s frequency-agnostic xMax is a market leader.

xG Technology was the platinum sponsor at the 2013 Wireless Symposium that was held in San Antonio, TX January 16-18, 2013.

The Wireless Symposium brought together leading rural telecom providers from across the country. The theme of the event was the need for providers to evolve their networks to meet the needs of their customers. With the fast-paced changes of the industry, they need to develop a strategy and position their organizations to be competitive. Consumer demands are growing every day and will only increase. To meet their needs, it is essential that rural providers stay on top of generation trends and discover the keys to success.

George Schmitt, xG Technology Director and CEO of MB Technology Holdings, the parent company of xG, gave the keynote address at the Wireless Symposium. His presentation focused on the challenges faced by independent local exchange carriers, including increasing competition, growing broadband demand, regulatory requirements, the transition from older circuit-switched networks to all-IP ones, and the ability to recover costs on rural deployments.

George discussed the benefits a cognitive radio-based solution like xG’s xMax could offer local carriers. These include the ability to eliminate spectrum barriers, support for regulated as well as unregulated operations, and cognitive capabilities such as self-planning, self-organizing and self-optimizing.

In summary, he showed how the xMax system could help position rural operators to take advantage of the shift of federal subsidies (known as USF or Universal Service Fund) from wireline voice services to broadband data. xG also had a booth at the show where they welcomed a number of providers to discuss how xMax could expand the reach of their business

xG Technology was featured in an article that appeared in Forbes Magazine recently entitled "The Future Of Wireless: The Case For Spectrum Sharing."

The article discussed the growing need for spectrum on the part of wireless carriers. This has been driven by the dramatic demand for mobile broadband, which itself is the result of increased use of smart devices. Smart phones consume 24 times more data than conventional phones, and tablets can use up to 120 times more bandwidth.

The FCC has felt pressure to make more spectrum available – and quickly. Recent announcements of spectrum-driven partnerships on the part of carriers illustrate this. A deal between Comcast and Verizon received government approval in August 2012; it allowed Verizon to buy an unused swath of bandwidth for $3.6 billion. AT&T received approval to operate in Sirius XM’s spectrum in October.

In addition to consumers' insatiable appetite for broadband data apps. Industry needs are also driving the spectrum hunt.

Content providers like Google, Yahoo and eBay and other IP-centric companies depend heavily on existing carrier networks as delivery vehicles for their service offerings – and thus are at risk of having their services preempted or interrupted by the carrier. With uncertainty surrounding the Net Neutrality issue, it is easy to see how content and over-the-top service providers could benefit from deploying their own networks as an alternative to conventional telco and mobile carrier networks.

Recent actions suggest that the FCC is rethinking its traditional spectrum policy of focusing on auctions – which has led to increased concentration of the airwaves in the hands of the large carriers.

The concept of “spectrum sharing” is beginning to gain traction as a more optimal solution for every stakeholder involved, from carriers to consumers. The FCC announced in September that it would begin implementing recommendations from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). The PCAST report concluded that the best way to increase capacity is to use new technologies that will enable large blocks of spectrum to be shared.

Ironically, such changes could actually benefit incumbents (providing a way of offloading data to relieve network congestion), as well as allowing numerous new players into the wireless game. The result will be good for consumers and for competition.

xG Technology announced in a press release today that it has received a $10 million purchase order for xMax cognitive radio network broadband equipment from TelAtlantic Wireless Services, LLC. TelAtlantic is an Alexandria, Virginia-based company whose management is affiliated with multiple rural local exchange carriers in the Appalachian Region and Mid-America.

This purchase order brings the total announced backlog of orders and reseller agreements for xMax equipment and services to over $29.6 million. This order continues to demonstrate the growing appeal of xMax into a wide range of vertical and geographic markets including public safety, gaming and casinos, government, education and rural telephone companies.

The xMax cognitive radio solution provides a key advantage to TelAtlantic Wireless Services and other service providers operating in the rural telecom market. These providers have traditionally had limited options for deploying wireless services due to a lack of appropriate or sufficient licensed spectrum assets. xMax has the ability to operate in unlicensed spectrum, which enables the delivery of reliable wireless voice and broadband services without the need for costly licensed frequencies.

"In the current uncertain regulatory environment, there is a need to evolve as a provider of telecommunications service. To achieve this, our goal is to introduce new regulated and non-regulated products and services in rural communities," said Jim Crabtree, Vice Chairman of TWS. "We are proud to play a key role in incorporating game-changing technologies such as xG's xMax mobile broadband solution that helps us offer state of the art services to rural America."

George Schmitt, xG Director and CEO of MB Technology Holdings, the parent company of xG, said, “We are very honored to receive this order from TWS. Rural broadband is a growing market for xG, and this order supports our mission of delivering high-performance, cost-effective xMax wireless networks to the thousands of rural and independent service providers seeking an effective broadband solution.”

xG Technology was featured today in a blog post that appeared on TMCNet. In the post entitled "xG Scores Another Potential Win," TMCNet CEO (and noted telecom industry expert) Rich Tehrani discussed xG's $6M sales win announced on January 14 and the announcement today that Cornet Technology has entered into an agreement with xG to resell $5M worth of the company’s products to the government and DoD.

Among his comments are the following:

"If the company is successful selling to the government via this deal – it could do exceedingly well selling to other governments around the world and to more US agencies as well. Also, M2M (machine to machine) could be a market which can benefit from the company's solutions."
