MOBILE VOIP: THE FIRST
APPLICATION
xG has selected Mobile VoIP
(voice over IP) as
its first vertical market to showcase the benefits made possible by its advanced technology. xG has
designed its xMax Mobile VoIP Service from the ground
up, and includes a wireless handset (capable of
operating in xMax and WiFi modes) + base
station product line.
VoIP is the emerging technology that offers low-cost calling
over the Internet or any other IP-based network instead of
traditional voice networks. The chief advantages of VoIP are
cheaper local and international calls, and free calls to
other VoIP users.
The key value proposition for
xMax is that it lowers the cost of deploying broadband
services. xMax accomplishes this by increasing the range of RF
signals. By delivering broadband signals significantly farther
than other technologies operating at the same frequency and
power level, xMax reduces the amount of infrastructure
required to cover a given area wirelessly by 25-50 fold
depending on the terrain. The pairing of xMax and WiFi modes makes the deployment of
mobile VoIP services
possible for the first time without relying on existing
cellular networks.
Most VoIP callers today rely on
access to a fixed data network for Internet access to place
calls, however, short range wireless solutions such as VoWLAN
(Voice over Wireless LAN) are now beginning to emerge. VoWLAN
is just like VoIP but over a WiFi network, which only provides
limited hotspot coverage inside the home, at the office, or
locations where access is granted such as coffee shops or
airports.
Freeing VoIP callers from their computer terminals or short
range WiFi coverage, xG Technology's
mobile VoIP product line
will combine the metropolitan area coverage of xMax base
stations with the indoor hotspot coverage of WiFi.
xG views
its xMax voice product as a stepping stone to more bandwidth-intensive
applications like Internet and video. Its technology will
allow the real possibility of mobile “triple-play” bundled
services that include voice, data, and video.
