The xMax® xMod™ is a mobile hotspot device that allows users of WiFi-enabled smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other devices to seamlessly access the Internet through the xMax cognitive radio network. The xMod acts as a bridge between WiFi-enabled end user devices and the wide-area xMax radio network. Although the xMax network uses a radio technology far more advanced than WiFi, the xMod enables any Internet ready device to connect to the xMax network using secure WiFi links, or USB or Ethernet cables. It supports fixed and mobile users and has been designed to provide exceptional QoS (Quality of Service) while supporting calls, texting (SMS) and broadband data streams over the xMax network.
The xMod enables operators to deploy long-range xMax networks that can smoothly integrate with the large installed base of WiFi and Ethernet-capable wireless devices. Subscribers can easily install and set up an xMod to support any device having a WiFi, USB or Ethernet connection. By incorporating high-power xMax radios and 2x4 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology, xMods can provide range and reliability that is superior to WiFi-based wide-area systems.
The IP-based xMod is the first commercial mobile hotspot with built-in, patented cognitive radio technology to allow network operators using unlicensed spectrum to deliver a “licensed spectrum experience” to their customers. By incorporating an advanced system that detects, mitigates and avoids interference, the xMod delivers outstanding reliability, range and throughput in the most challenging conditions.
The xMod supports the proprietary, high-performance xMax air-interface, which was designed for operation in both unlicensed and licensed bands (currently commercially available for operation in 900MHz ISM band).
